MUIH held its 2020-2021 Commencement Ceremony in person at the Lyric Theater in Baltimore, on October 24th. This ceremony was for the graduating classes of 2019-2020 and 2020-2021.

October 24, 2-4 pm (Eastern), 2021: MUIH will hold its 2020-2021 Commencement Ceremony in person at the Lyric Theater in Baltimore. This ceremony is for the graduating classes of 2019-2020 and 2020-2021. MUIH is committed to holding an in-person Commencement ceremony and providing graduates with the opportunity to participate in this traditional and special celebration. Read about the required COVID-19 protocols, the COVID-19 advisory, and additional information.

Guests:
Based on the current COVID-19 health and safety protocols there is no limit to the number of guests that each graduate can bring. No tickets are needed for guests to enter the Lyric Theater. 

COVID-19 Health and Safety Protocols: MUIH is committed to providing a ceremony that provides a safe experience for  graduates and their guests, in alignment with health and safety protocols outlined by federal, state, and local entities as well as MUIH’s COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan. The following health and safety protocols will be used and enforced for this event. Additional details and directions for each of these will be provided upon arrival  at the Lyric Theater.

  • Masking: Masks are required for all graduates and their guests, and all MUIH and Lyric employees. Temporary unmasking will be permitted only for individuals with a speaking role during the ceremony, during the time they are speaking, and for graduates, if they wish, as they cross the stage to facilitate photography. 
  • Health Status Checks: The individual health status of graduates and their guests and MUIH employees will not be checked in advance of the ceremony or upon arrival at the Lyric Theater. Health checks, temperature checks, vaccination status, and recent COVID-19 test results will not be checked for graduates and their guests and MUIH employees. The health status of Lyric employees will be checked before their entry to the building.
  • COVID-19 Illness: Graduates and their guests who are sick with COVID-19 or think they might have COVID-19 are asked not to attend the event to ensure the health and safety of themselves and of others, per guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
  • Physical Distancing: Physical distancing will be used in the lobby and other common spaces of the building, during entry and departure from the building, and while seated in the theater. Graduates and guests are discouraged from congregating in indoor common spaces, such as lobby areas, before and after the ceremony.
  • Graduate Seating: University Marshals will seat graduates in designated and physically distanced seats.
  • Guest Seating: Ushers will seat guests in designated and physically distanced seats; guests will not be permitted to seat themselves. Groups of family and friend guests arriving together will be allowed to sit together in a pod with no spacing between the individuals in their pod. Ushers will ensure spacing between pods to provide physical distancing between groups of individuals.
  • On-Stage Protocols: Protocols will be in place for the on-stage hooding of doctoral graduates and congratulations of all graduates as they cross the stage. Hugging and hand shaking will not be permitted.

COVID-19 Advisory: Graduates and their guests are advised to be aware of the general risks associated with exposure to the COVID-19 virus, to assess their individual health status and risks in the context of the health and safety protocols outlined above, and to exercise personal responsibility and concern for others in deciding to attend this event. Graduates and their guests are advised to be prepared for changes in the COVID-19 health and safety protocols and the commencement ceremony plans between now and late October due to the evolving nature of the pandemic. Decisions and new requirements may be put in place by the Lyric, the City of Baltimore, the State of Maryland, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); MUIH may be required to comply with these decisions, and they may impact aspects our ceremony. MUIH will share any changes in planning this website and emails to graduates.

Live Stream of the Ceremony: MUIH will provide a live online stream of the commencement ceremony for graduates and their family and friends who cannot attend the event in person.
